Trmice Motorway Bridge near Aussig in the Czech Republic

Piers and superstructure for steel
composite bridge cost-effectively formed

Since 2004, the Czech Republic has been a member state of the European Union. Therefore, work is being carried out at a very fast pace to integrate the country into the European network of trunk roads. Currently, the D 8 motorway on the Czech side and the A 17 German autobahn are being developed to form a very important arterial road, the new E55 European highway between Dresden and Prague. Recently, a section of 45 km long motorway between the Dresden-West interchange and the Czech border was opened for traffic. By the end of 2006, the complete route on the German side should be finished.

Around 53 kilometres of the Czech D 8 are already in use. Two missing sections, 17 km through the Bohemian mountain range and 23 km between Trmice near Aussig on the River Elbe (in Czech: Usti nad Labem) and the state border, should follow within the next two years. As part of this project, the Prague-based construction company, METROSTAV, has erected a 1,083 metre long motorway bridge on the outskirts of Aussig/Trmice. The steel composite construction - involving a formwork carriage for the first time in the Czech Republic - with counter-positioned and changing radii, snakes its way across a wide plain. The two separate superstructures have widths ranging from 14.20 m up to a maximum of 15.40 metres for both driving directions and are carried by a total of 59 piers. The striking Y-shape of the up to 27 metre high, solid bridge piers is clearly shown through the use of two different wall thicknesses in the area of the pier heads.

    Project Manager

“PERI provided the most cost-effective formwork solution for constructing the columns and superstructure. Using the PERI composite formwork carriage resulted in considerable cost savings for us. In addition, normal rail traffi c operations could be maintained during the entire construction period.”
