Fast climbing cycle sequences and high quality standard

Located around 140 kilometres north of Luxor, a new 330 m wide dam was constructed across the Nile. The project consists of 64 MW hydro-electric plant, a seven-gate weir facility for water level adjustment as well as two 170 m long navigation locks with widths of 17 metres which ensure smooth passage for the many vessels using this busy waterway. The large volumes, consisting in part of powerful reinforced concrete structural elements, required the use of very stable and, at the same time, time-saving climbing formwork. This had be moved efficiently and allow high pouring speeds during concreting.

By means of a proven climbing formwork solution - consisting of SKS climbing brackets and VARIO GT 24 girder wall formwork - two columns in the power station area, one column between the weir and lock facilities as well as six intermediate columns in the weir installation itself were cost-effectively built. The enormous main columns have heights reaching up to 138 metres and 17.50 m widths. Colossal intermediate walls with thicknesses between one and four metres reinforce and brace the structure. Altogether, for this up to 30 metre high construction, around 380,000 m³ of reinforced concrete was formed.

Plans envisaged the erection of individual building elements simultaneously thus achieving the shortest possible construction period. In order to ensure the highest level of material utilization as possible and accelerate the production process even further, work was divided into horizontal and vertical casting segments. Together with the local site management team, PERI engineers developed optimized cycle operations which were consistently maintained throughout by means of detailed target/actual comparisons. This led to a very efficient completion of the reinforced concrete work and greatly contributed to problemfree construction progress.

“The good experience we had using proven PERI systems in previous projects was also a decisive factor to renew our co-operation for the Naga Hammadi dam contract. All forming, reinforcement and concreting work could be carried out on safe working platforms. This facilitated fast cycle times. in spite of the extremely short construction period requirements, high quality standards could be maintained throughout.”
