High demands during normal plant operations

As part of an expnsion and modernisation programme, a 43-metre high silo along with an impressive 77-metre high production facility were constructed during normal plant operations. Due to close collaboration from an early stage, a sophisticated formwork and scaffolding solution was developed which took into consideration all aspects of the construction schedule.

The 30 cm thick reinforced concrete external wall of the silo tower, with a 12 m internal diameter, was constructed with climbing units consisting of CB climbing brackets and VARIO girder wall panels. Additional infill spaces created the exact curvature of the formlining required. For cleaning the formlining and doing the reinforcement work, the external formwork on the CB 240 climbing brackets could be moved by means of a carriage and, on the inside, tilted backwards on the CB 160. The external formwork was used to form the massive intermediate slabs and, at the same time, served as stable slab edge stopend formwork as well as working and safety scaffold. For each of the 13 concreting sections with 3.30 m standard cycle heights respectively, the formwork crew required only four days.

The 6-storey production facility was built using a concrete frame construction and the floor slabs with integrated beams were efficiently constructed using MULTIFLEX girder slab formwork and the lightweight HANDSET as side formwork. The up to 2.50 m high diagonally-positioned beams, with their extremely wide range of dimensions, resulted in an irregular and complicated geometry. For transferring the high loads at floor heights between 10 and 16 metres, PERI UP was the optimal solution. Then the load-carrying system allowed up to 40 kN leg loads and, within the frame work units themselves, the imposed horizontal loads were carried via the diagonal struts. Freestanding towers were stabilized by means of RS 1000 push-pull props. For forming the edge beams, the shoring was supplemented using only cantilevered UCB bracket extensions - in so doing, a working and safety scaffold was also made available. In order to be able to move the slab formwork and shoring to the next floor as early as possible, MULTIPROP aluminium slab props served as temporary props.

    Site Manager

“I am more than satisfi ed with the comprehensive PERI formwork and scaffolding solution as well as the easy and simple handling of the PERI
systems used. Even the inexperienced site personnel could still work quickly and safely with the equipment. PERI always delivered the required
materials on time to the construction site which meant construction progress whilst coping with on-going plant operations was possible ”
