Versatile use of the PERI UP scaffold system

The new science and congress centre is built on a prime city-centre location, directly opposite the well-known castle, and offers an ideal platform for international scientific congresses and seminars along with cultural events and concerts. The building complex with technically challenging architecture is the result of a joint project between the Technical University, City of Darmstadt and the State of Hesse. The very ambitious construction schedule earmarked only 15 months for the structural work.

On a ground area of 8,000 m², three basement levels - with parking and mechanical floors - as well as three upper floors were constructed. The latter contain one dividable conference hall, 20 seminar rooms, foyer, a restaurant and various exhibition areas. Thesculpture-like structure with interlaced building parts has few straight surfaces. Inclined slabs and up to 23 m high sloping wall sections, as well as filigree columns and pylons had to be accurately concreted - mostly in high-grade architectural concrete quality.

In close co-operation with PERI engineers, the contractor´s project planning included a well thought-out cycle sequence which meant on-site material requirements for the respective use of the optimized formwork systems could be reduced to a minimum. For constructing the reinforced concrete walls, the VARIO GT 24 girder wall formwork guaranteed high quality concrete surface with the TRIO panel formwork ensuring fast construction progress. Both wall formwork systems could be combined internally and externally.

The modular PERI UP scaffolding system once again proved its versatility during this project. Thus it was possible to carry out a wide range of scaffolding requirements as well as implementing smooth and efficient building progress with same constructional elements. As spatially-designed supporting formwork, loads could be reliably transferred from large heights into the ground according to type test specifications. PERI UP staircases served as a site entrance facility and for accessing the working platforms. Setting the formwork ties and closing the wall formwork, as well as reinforcement and concreting work, could be quickly and safely carried out with help of PERI UP reinforcement scaffolding units. The fact that the scaffold could be moved by crane in large-area segments proved to be a particular advantage.

“PERI provided us with the most appropriate solution for each and every requirement. With the PERI UP modular scaffold system, shoring for large heights could be easily and quickly assembled as well. And the 12 m high PERI UP reinforcement scaffold units could be moved in large-area sections with the crane - well-worth its weight in gold!”
